Grab PDFpenPro Version 6 While It’s On Sale for 48 Hours!

PDFpenPro Version 6 available on Mac App Store for 48 hourI watched MacSparky’s screencast on PDFpen Version 6 and thought I’d have to wait several fretful days for the sale to happen but it’s here!

I’m a big fan of Smile Software’s PDFpenPro but I’ve always taken the position that Mac-lawyers who work a lot with PDFs need to invest in a full version of Adobe Acrobat Professional, just like I believe Mac-lawyers need to invest in a full version of Microsoft Office for the Mac. These are the “professional-grade” tools for our profession.

But with Version 6 of PDFpenPro, Smile is definitely narrowing the gap. Version 6 adds the ability to export to Word and form recognition which has historically been Acrobat Professional space. I’m still hesitant to completely abandon my Acrobat Professional recommendation, but I can tell you that I’m buying PDFpenPro Version 6 today because it’s that good.

First, go watch MacSparky’s screencast so some of his excitement can rub off on you.

Second, go read Smile’s blog post so you can understand the different purchase options. This gets a little confusing, but lemme offer some help: Buy the Mac App Store version so that you can take advantage of iCloud support. MacSparky has only barely commented publicly on why this is important, but when I’ve talked with him personally I completely understand the seamlessness of the system – PDFs sync between your Mac and iPad/iPhone via iCloud so you don’t have to worry about what folder they’re in, whether you e-mailed it, etc.

You only have 48 hours to buy PDFpenPro Version 6 on the Mac App Store for $39.99 before it goes back to its regular price of $79.99.

2012 Black Friday Mac & iOS Deals for Lawyers

Everyone enjoys a good deal, and fortunately the Black Friday craziness extends to the Mac & iOS App Stores. Here are some of the deals I’ve seen today that are excellent for lawyers and legal professionals:

1password 2012blackfriday1Password for Mac, iOS & Windows

Agile Bits is discounting the entire line of 1Password versions for Mac, iPhone, iPad & Windows so you should pick up whatever version you may still need. I’m a big fan of the 1Password family as a password-manager and I love the fact that I have access to my sync’d database from any device.

If you’re just starting out, I recommend 1Password for Mac reduced to $34.99 from $49.99 and 1Password Pro reduced to $9.99 from $14.99 which is universal for both iPhone and iPad.

2011 Black Friday Mac & iOS Deals for Lawyers

In looking at the analytics of the site, it’s obvious that you the reader like to see links to good deals. And it’s my pleasure to point you in the right direction.

1Password 2011 Black Friday Deals for Mac Using Lawyers1Password – 50% OFF!

First, AgileBits is taking 50% off all versions of 1Password. If you don’t have 1Password yet, this is an excellent time to pick up the Mac, Windows and iOS versions.

Many folks I talk to tell me that they don’t need a password manager – that they are perfectly fine remembering their own passwords. But then I ask if their password is the word “password” or their spouses name, or their kids names, or the month of the year. And then I’ve made my point – we ALL need a password manager.

And as lawyers, it is especially important for us to take digital precautions to better protect the information on our computer, and better manage the information we all access on the Internet.

So I have 1Password on my Mac, and whenever I log on to a website, I can have 1Password automatically complete my login information (I use the ⌘- keyboard shortcut).

But on top of that, I have my 1Password Keychain sync with Dropbox, which means that 1Password on my iPhone/iPad have access to same information. That means I can visit the same websites on my iPhone & iPad and be able to login with the same information through the 1Password App.

I also use 1Password to keep track of all my software purchases and registration keys. This isn’t such a big problem anymore if I purchase software from the Mac App Store, but for all the other software, 1Password is my central way to manage all those licenses and registration keys.

1Password for Mac (Mac App Store) – $24.99 (reg. $49.99)

1Password Pro Universal for both iPhone & iPad (App Store) – $6.99 (reg. $13.99)

These deals go through Nov. 30.

Noteshelf – Beautiful Handwritten Notes on the iPad … and it’s on Sale this Weekend!

Noteshelf handwriting app for ipadNoteshelf is my favorite hand-writing, note-taking app on the iPad. I’m very aware of Notes Plus, Penultimate, UPAD and many others, but I’ve found Noteshelf to most closely mirror the experience of writing with pen on paper.

First, I like the bookshelf for organizing my notes. And the last update provided the ability to folder notebooks together which is invaluable. You also have several templates to choose from such as legal pad, wide ruled paper or plain white.

Noteshelf Zoom Mode writing setupMy typical setup for writing is to use the Zoom Mode because writing on the main part is just too small. I also turn on the wrist protection feature so that I don’t make any marks when I rest the palm of my hand to write.

I start writing in the Zoom Mode box and when I hit the shaded Autoscroll area on the right, the box automatically jumps to the next area for more writing. It may sound a little complicated, but it works great on the iPad.

I also like the Export options offered in Noteshelf. Up until a few months ago, it was the only note-taking app that allowed me to export directory to Evernote or Dropbox (in addition to e-mail, iTunes, etc.) as either a JPG or PDF. When I take notes on a regular legal pad, I’ll bring those notes back to my office and scan them into my computer as a PDF, so Noteshelf basically helps me eliminate several steps there.

I rarely change the color or thickness of the pen that I use in Noteshelf, since I’m happy with just the black pen at a 1 point size. There are times when I’ll indicate a section with a heavier red marker. Noteshelf offers all kinds of colors for your taste.

Lastly, you can certainly use your finger to write notes in Noteshelf, but that’s silly. I don’t use a stylus for much else on the iPad, but it’s a must-have accessory for writing notes in Noteshelf.

My current favorite stylus is the SGP Kuel H10 because I really like the smaller rubber nub. My old standby is the Boxwave stylus. I’m anxious to try out the Wacom Bamboo Stylus which is supposed to have the same size nub as the SGP Kuel with the heft of a regular pen.

Noteshelf is a bargain at it’s regular price of $4.99, but it’s a veritable no-brainer at it’s sale price of only 99¢. I don’t know how long it’ll be on sale, but it’s absolutely worth picking up this weekend.

Mac Software Deal: TotalFinder Only $9 Today at MacUpdate Promo

TotalFinder on sale today at MacUpdate Promo

I have become a huge fan of TotalFinder since purchasing it the last time MacUpdate Promo had it on sale for $9 back in December. It was one of my “Mac Power User” tips when I presented with Ben Stevens & Finis Price at this year’s ABA TECHSHOW.

TotalFinder Brett Burney ABA TECHSHOW 2011

I like TotalFinder because it’s simple. It adds features that I think should be in Finder by default.

The best feature for me is “tabs.” Do you remember what it was like before we had tabs in web browsers? I had multiple browser windows open all the time.

Before TotalFinder, I had multiple Finder windows open to copy files from one place to another, or to access files in different locations. TotalFinder has completely streamlined my whole workflow with that one feature alone.

Other features I use in TotalFinder are the “cut” button and the fact that I can put “Folders on Top” of my file listing. You can tweak TotelFinder through the icon that it adds in the Finder Preferences.

TotalFinder is regularly $15 which is a deal in itself, but it’s a no-brainer for $9. Just visit www.mupromo.com.

LAST DAY to Purchase an Awesome Software Bundle from ProductiveMacs.com

Productive Macs software bundleToday (May 31, 2011) is the last day to take advantage of the fantastic software bundle at ProductiveMacs.com. The name alone should clue you in that this is not your typical software bundle with games and filler – this one has serious applications that are beneficial to any Mac-using lawyer.

First, you have TextExpander, which is one of the must-have utilities I featured in my TechnoFeature: Nine Mac Utilities That Will Boost Your Law Firm’s Productivity. On the simple end, you can use TextExpander to fill in your e-mail signatures; on the intricate end, TextExpander can become a full-fledged document generation tool. TextExpander costs $35 on its own.

Next, Path Finder is an incredibly powerful add-on for Finder. I prefer using TotalFinder for its simplicity, but Path Finder offers a wealth of features such as dual panes, the “drop stack,” and an integrated Stuffit engine. Path Finder costs $40 on its own.

Next, HoudahSpot is an extremely powerful search tool that makes Spotlight look wimpy. If you find yourself wishing Spotlight could offer more options for searching, then HoudahSpot could be your answer. HoudahSpot costs $30 on its own.

Next, Keyboard Maestro is a powerful tool that lets you program your own macros to control applications, windows, menus, open documents and much more. There are many ways to accomplish these tasks on a Mac, but I know many people that streamline their computing tasks with Keyboard Maestro. It costs $36 on its own.

Lastly, Mail Act-On has become my absolute favorite Mail add-on from Indev Software (who also offer MailTags). Mail Act-On lets you file e-mail messages into folders with a few keystrokes, and gives you more options for creating Mail rules. I can’t really imagine ever going back to the drag-n-drop days of moving e-mail messages around. Mail Act-On costs $25 on its own.

All of these incredible apps (plus three more) are all available for ONLY $29.99!! That’s an incredible price not only because it’s an incredible deal, but most software bundles like this clock in at $50!

Needless to say, I highly recommend you visiting ProductiveMacs.com and picking up this incredible bundle today before the deal ends AT THE END OF THE DAY! I guarantee that you’ll use more than one of these apps and so the deal pays for itself. I recommend starting with Mail Act-On or TextExpander and go from there.

Disclaimer: If you purchase the bundle by clicking my personalized link, I will be reimbursed for the bundle that I purchased. However, if you prefer to visit the site on your own, please feel free to visit www.productivemacs.com. Either way, buy the bundle and enjoy some great software!

Get ‘Em Now! iPhone & iPad Apps On Sale for Christmas!

iPhone and iPad Apps on Sale for ChristmasI received quite a number of hits when I posted about iPhone and iPad Apps on sale during Black Friday, so you guys are obviously interested in finding deals on iOS Apps.

Well, you’re in luck because there are some mega-sales going on right now in the App Store.

First, ’tis the season and a lot of developers are feelin’ the spirit.

Second, there’s a “price freeze” that went into effect yesterday (Dec. 23) on the App Store for the holidays, and I presume as Apple gears up for the Mac App Store coming on line in two weeks.

I love finding App deals myself, and since I KNOW there will be a profusion of iPads under the trees this year, I’ll be updating this page as I find more sales to share. So keep checking back!
